A new club at Rock Creek Elementary this year is Media Club. This new club is led by Madeline Knese (Special Education Teacher) and Nicole Black (1st Grade Teacher). A couple years ago we started the Leader in Me journey and are actively working to build leaders that understand and utilize the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Not only do we want to build students that academically achieve, but we also want to develop skills that are essential for a productive and happy life full of meaning and purpose.
This is where media club has stepped in to showcase student leadership in action! They are teaching students how to use various forms of media and this group of students across several grade levels, with the support of the staff leaders, are now leading our monthly assembly that is put on for all Rock Creek Elementary students. The students in media club work to brainstorm ideas, organize thoughts, make presentations, shoot videos, take pictures, and practice the delivery of the assembly as a group. They then put in action by putting on an assembly, teaching the leader in me habits, and presenting to over 400 students and 80 staff members.
Seeing students shine brightly, grow in leadership abilities, and be on fire about teaching these habits is an exciting thing to witness first hand. Madeline Knese, special education teacher and sponsor for Media Club stated, "Media club has been so fun to start this year. The students have really embraced it and have enjoyed creating the materials for the assemblies. It has been fun watching students from different grade levels work together and lead our monthly assemblies. They really take pride in them."
This is the kind of work that is the prime example of what we work to achieve each day and build with every student. It aligns perfectly to our school mission of "If We Believe We Can Achieve, Rock Creek Students Will Succeed!"" This is just one of the many leadership opportunities that we provide for students and we know students are learning and growing through these efforts.
